5 Rules for Choosing the Right Rug
A rug is an essential element of interior decoration and comfort. But to make sure you choose the right one, you'll need to pay attention to a few points...
From professional advice on thicknesses or materials, decorating rules on colors or dimensions, and pitfalls to avoid, My New Design guides you!
1 The Right Dimensions for Your Rug
It is, of course, essential to adapt the rug to the dimensions of your room... A rug that is too large will tend to shrink the space.
Also avoid the eternal and conventional arrangement of the rug placed like a doormat at the foot of the bed or in front of the sofa.
Prefer to place it under your reclining armchair or under the bed; this will bring a structured ambiance to your room.
MND advises you to test the dimensions and position of a rug by first placing cardboard on the floor to get an idea of the space it will occupy, then measure the dimensions.
You can define the standard dimensions of a rug to guide your choice depending on the room. For example, a 90 x 160 cm rug would be ideal for a bedroom, while a 200 cm x 300 cm rug would be perfect in a living room.
It is also possible to mix several small rugs, overlapping them slightly, thus creating a patchwork of patterns and colors. Be careful with their thickness!
2 The Rug Material
The choice of material for a living room rug depends on its use and its place in the home. You have the choice between 2 types of materials: Synthetic or natural.
My New Design has opted for rugs made from a mix of natural (wool) and synthetic (viscose) materials.
Synthetic Materials
Viscose is a semi-synthetic material and resembles silk. Made from cellulose and collodion, viscose rugs are soft and maintain a shiny, bright, and soft appearance.
Artificial fibers allow for the creation of designer rugs with varied colors.
Stain-resistant and easy to maintain, polyester rugs retain the brilliance of their colors over time. MND advises and offers rugs with a medium pile height to achieve a beautiful effect once the room is furnished.
Natural Materials
Authentic and comfortable, natural fiber rugs offer good sound and thermal insulation.
These rugs, made from natural materials such as cotton, wool, or sisal, give your interior a raw, cozy, and warm touch.
Wicker, natural wood, pastel, and light shades will be enhanced by a natural fiber rug. They are easy to maintain with a vacuum cleaner, a sponge, and appropriate cleaning products.
3 The Color
It's true that tastes and colors are not to be debated! However, it is advisable to follow certain rules to avoid spoiling the harmony of a room.
Indeed, the choice of certain colors can impact the volume of a living space, making it smaller or, conversely, larger. A rug is a very visible decorative element that can change the ambiance and atmosphere of your living room or bedroom. Here are some rules:
Color According to Style
If you've opted for a distinct style and particular tones: You can either choose a rug that integrates seamlessly with this style, or you can bring in an unconventional touch that will add contrast and character to your room.
If your decor is rather neutral, or basic, this is an opportunity to introduce color and create a universe around this new element. Opt for original colors and patterns, create your style around this rug!
If your decor is rather busy or rich in colors and decorative elements, then opt for a solid-colored rug.
A decorating rule is not to combine more than 3 colors in the same room.
Color According to Volume
The rule is simple:
- Small room: Light colors (beige, white...), this will add a nice decorative touch without overloading your room.
- Large room: Darker colors (brown, black...), this option creates a cozy and warm ambiance. Be careful not to overuse dark colors in a large room as this could create a stark atmosphere!
Don't forget to choose the color according to foot traffic: avoid light colors for a hallway rug or one in a high-traffic area between the kitchen and living room, for example, to save yourself the stress of stains and footprints!
4 Patterns and Style
As previously mentioned, for an interior with already rich decor, opt for a solid-colored rug or one with subtle patterns.
With neutral decor, you can, on the contrary, opt for more graphic patterns and shapes, with geometric and contemporary patterns like "links to rugs"... their patterns and colors bring dynamism and modernity to your living spaces.
For a soothing ambiance, choose floral or exotic patterns like "links to rugs". To create a more colorful or flashy atmosphere, for example, choose our "Rainbow" rug.
Our more solid models will bring sobriety and elegance to your living room or bedroom; they fit into all interiors: "links to rugs".
5 Maintenance
Buying a rug also means thinking about how you will maintain it. The material of your rug will influence its resistance to wear over time.
100% natural fibers are obviously more delicate, and their maintenance requires specific products.
My New Design has opted for a mix of natural (wool) and synthetic (viscose) materials and they are particularly appreciated for their resistance to stains, humidity, and crushing. These models are suitable for both high-traffic areas and resting areas, such as the living room or bedroom.
